Pawtucket Couple Sentenced for Sexual Assault Charges

As reported by Maria Armental in the July 12, 2012 edition of the Providence Journal, a Pawtucket couple has been sentenced in sexual assault related cases. The husband was a sport coach and it is alleged that their victims were children they met through sports. The husband was sentenced to fifty (50) years imprisonment, with twenty-five (25) years to serve for charges of child molestation. The wife was sentenced to five (5) years imprisonment, with one (1) year to serve on charges of third degree sexual assault.

Pursuant to Rhode Island General Laws 11-37-8.1, first degree child molestation is defined as a person is guilty of first degree child molestation sexual assault if he or she engages in sexual penetration with a person fourteen (14) years of age or under. The penalties if convicted include imprisonment for a period of not less than twenty-five (25) years and may be imprisoned for life.

Pursuant to R.I.G.L. 11-37-8.3, second degree child molestation is defined as a person is guilty of a second degree child molestation sexual assault if he or she engages in sexual contact with another person fourteen (14) years of age or under. The penalties if convicted include imprisonment for not less than six (6) years nor more than thirty (30) years. The husband's victims were five (5) boys and two (2) girls ages thirteen (13) to seventeen (17) years old.

Pursuant to R.I.G.L. 11-37-6, third degree sexual assault is a person is guilty of third degree sexual assault if he or she is over the age of eighteen (18) years and engaged in sexual penetration with another person over the age of fourteen (14) years and under the age of consent, sixteen (16) years of age. The penalties if convicted include imprisoned for not more than five (5) years. The wife's victims were three (3) boys.
