Newport, Rhode Island Lawyer Lectures on Sex Crimes & Cyber Crimes

It is an honor to once again have the opportunity to lecture for the Administration of Justice Department at Salve Regina University on the topic of sex crimes and cyber crimes in Rhode Island. Initially, the lecture focused on the definitions and penalties of the following Rhode Island sex crimes:

  • First Degree Sexual Assault
  • Second Degree Sexual Assault
  • Third Degree Sexual Assault
  • First Degree Child Molestation
  • Second Degree Child Molestation
  • Abominable and Detestable Crime Against Nature
  • Disorderly Conduct - Lascivious Purpose
  • Disorderly Conduct - Indecent Exposure
  • Commercial Sexual Activity
  • Production, Reproduction or Distribution of Child Pornography
  • Possession of Child Pornography
  • Sexting

The lecture also focused on the emerging area of cyber crimes which include video voyeurism, sexting and child pornography, which was thoroughly reviewed and analyzed during the sex crimes lecture. In 2011, new statutes regarding sexting and minors were enacted. For more information regarding cyber crimes, please see my article published in the March/April 2011 edition of the Rhode Island Bar Journal entitled "Cyber Crimes: Bullying, Stalking, Sexting & Texting."

The class focused on sex crimes investigations, specifically how criminals use computers and other electronic devices to commit sex crimes against children. Unfortunately, technological advances have made it easier for predators to have access to children and to exploit them. However, technology can be beneficial to police during their investigations as nearly all cell phones contain GPS information, call logs, text messages, photos and other technological evidence which can be utilized in investigating sex crimes and then in prosecuting alleged offenders.
